How to Create an Instagram Avatar
The Metaverse is coming and of course Instagram is joining in with the introduction of their Instagram Avatars.
Recently, Head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri explained that:
“Avatars are a key building block for the future of personal identity in the metaverse.”
While the Metaverse can be confusing, Instagram avatars don’t have to be! Here’s everything you need to know about what an avatar is, how to create one and what this means for the future of the Metaverse on Instagram.
What is an Instagram Avatar?
Let’s start with the basics! What exactly is an Instagram Avatar? Chances are you’ve probably seen something similar. If you ever went through a Bitmoji phase or even created a Memoji of yourself on your iPhone, well those are similar to what an Instagram Avatar is. Instagram Avatars are 3D personas that can be fully customizable.
Create an avatar that looks exactly like yourself or maybe you want to switch it up and create an entirely new persona. From facial features, to expressions, to outfits, the customizations for avatars are endless!
With Avatars still being new, they can only be used on Instagram Stories and in DMs currently but with all the talk of the Metaverse, we expect that to change.
How to create an Instagram Avatar
If you’re located in the United States, Canada, or Mexico, then you already have access to Instagram Avatars. More regions are expected to come in the following months.
Heres how to create and customize your own in Instagram:
- Head to your Profile Page and click on “Edit Profile”
- Tap on “Edit picture or avatar” and then tap “Create avatar”
- The customization page will appear prompting you to choose a skin tone for your avatar.
- Personalize your avatar with hairstyle, hair color, face shape, and an outfit.
- Once you’ve made those choices for your avatar, you can tap on “More personalization” or tap “Done” and “Save Changes” to save and create your avatar.
How to make changes to or delete your Instagram avatar
Unhappy with your avatar or want to make some changes? That’s okay! Edit your avatar at anytime. Simply, head to your profile and tap on “Edit avatar” to make any new changes. There is a store option as well if you’re looking for even more customization options.
If you’re looking to delete your avatar entirely, you can do so in the avatar editor by tapping the trash can, then tapping “Delete”. Remember, this action is permanent and cannot be reversed! You will need to create a whole new avatar if you delete your current one.
How to use an Instagram Avatar
Now that your avatar is created, you will have access to stickers of your avatar to share in direct messages or stories. You also have the option to add your avatar to your profile picture!
And there you have Instagram Avatars! While we aren’t diving into the Metaverse at full speed just yet, these are the first steps to what could be an entirely different and immersive experience in the future.
