TikTok Testing Paid, Ad-Free Subscription

04 October 2023

With TikTok Shop recently gaining traction and now paid subscriptions coming to the app, it’s looking like the TikTok we know and love will soon be a thing of the past.

Spotted in some new code for the application, originally reported by Android Authority (see below), and confirmed by TikTok to TechCrunch, it seems like testing will be conducted for an ad-free experiment very soon.

<We are testing the Ad-free plan with the TikTok community.
By continuing, you agree to the {%s} and acknowledge that you have read our {%s} to learn how we collect, use and share data.
You also accept the immediate provision of the Ad-free subscription. Price includes VAT.>

With the new version of the app, some users are already seeing the new ad-free subscription option. During this testing phase, the ad-free experience will cost users $4.99 per month.

As of right now though, testing is only being done in a single English-speaking market outside of the US. TikTok has also stated that the testing does not necessarily mean that the feature will be officially launched.

Whether or not it makes it to an official release to everyone, one important detail to keep in mind is that users will be able to pay for an ad-free experience but only from ads served by TikTok. This won’t cover any brand campaigns or influencer ads that are common on the platform already.

Do we think that this will backfire on TikTok? Or do we think people will pay for the ad-free option?

Time will only tell with this news.

In the meantime, read up on TikTok Shop and learn more about their e-commerce platform!
